L.Y. Marlow is the third generation in her family to have been a victim and survivor of domestic violence: a violence that almost took her life and the life of her unborn child. In her award-winning book, Color Me Butterfly, she tells the poignant and evocative story of four generations of mothers and daughters: the true story of her grandmother, her mother, herself, and her daughter; and the impact intergenerational domestic violence has had on her family for over sixty years.
But the story does not end there. When L.Y. discovered that her 22-year-old daughter and granddaughter, a little girl named Promise, now the fifth generation, were trapped in an abusive relationship, she founded Saving Promise with the intention of saving Promise which blossomed into a vision for the nation.
As a former corporate executive with 20+ years overseeing and executing strategic programs for the government and private sector, L.Y. has combined her corporate expertise and passion for community service into a rewarding career as a social entrepreneur and the visionary behind Saving Promise.
L.Y. is the recipient of numerous Leadership, Engineering, Project Achievement and Advocacy Awards. Her literary work has won multiple awards and accolades including the National Best Books Award. Her sophomore book, A Life Apart (Penguin Random House, April 2014), tells the poignant story of a decades-long interracial love affair between a white sailor and the sister of the black sailor who saved his life at Pearl Harbor.
Regularly featured on national and local TV, radio, blogs, and print, L.Y. is a dedicated and sought after empowerment lecturer and spokeswoman for domestic violence awareness and prevention invited to speak for multiple public and private organizations, including the United Nations, the International Peace Conference and many more. Her authentic voice–an ordinary woman with an extraordinary story and vision–sets her organization and mission apart.
